‘Spirit of Alhambra’
These pieces seek to celebrate the large ceramic storage jars discovered at the Alhambra Palace, Granada, now displayed in the Museo de la Alhambra, Spain. Produced during the Nasrid Dynasty, in the 14th and 15th centuries, the rich decoration of these ceramics not only related to their use and location within the house but inspired my explorations into making contemporary responses.
The forms, the wing like handles, the horizontal decorations all reference the originals, the rawness in composition and materiality all nodding to the stunning relics. Drawing studies of the intricate surface pattern have been enlarged and explored on coil and slab-built forms creating exciting pattern and shape, with a colourful and lively approach giving them a new lease of life – and capturing their spirit.
