In Her Footsteps by Sarah McAlister
This small banner is presented as a connection between Wimbledon today and its Sufragette past.
In a literal translation of the title, footprints cross a representational map of Wimbledon on which are indicated significant locations in the history of Wimbledon Womens Social and Political Union (WWSPU).
Locations are marked on the map with discarded keys representing the unlocking of women’s rights when and since the suffragette movement was active.
This piece has been made entirely from found fabrics and objects. This grounds the piece in material histories that carry their own traces of use, memory, and care.
Through its materials, references, and methods, this work seeks to evoke a shared sense of history of this place and allow present and future activists to be inspired to walk in her footsteps.
