These three works are companions to Her Court. They tell the story of someone becoming free.
In Before Flight, we do not see the figure yet. But something is about to happen. The flowers, colours and air feel full of waiting.
In Mid-Air, the figure has lifted off the ground. She floats between two brooches, almost like two gates. These refer to the Holloway Prison brooch awarded to suffragette Rose Lamartine Yates after her release from prison. Between them, the floating figure becomes a sign of release, courage and freedom.
In After Flight, the figure has disappeared again. What remains is the feeling that flight has happened. The flowers hold the memory of it.
Together, the three works are small pieces of the larger world of Her Court: a world of velvet, flowers, colour, memory and freedom.
