Depicting the men’s Wimbledon’s Trophy, but with an apple adorning the lid instead of a pineapple as a point of difference, “Votes for Women” is a vessel by Lesley Boerio...
Depicting the men’s Wimbledon’s Trophy, but with an apple adorning the lid instead of a pineapple as a point of difference, “Votes for Women” is a vessel by Lesley Boerio inspired by the role Wimbledon played in the Suffragette movement.
Using Boerio’s signature use of sprig letters the vase reads “And We Will Go A-Voting” based on a lyric from “A Free Field” written in 1909 for Wimbledon Women’s Social and Political Union.
Inside is written “Deeds Not Words”, the suffragette slogan, a surprise for anybody brave enough to lift the lid of the art work and finished in yellow slip- a colour for optimism.
Purple, white and green glazes, the suffragette colours, decorate the form and rose embellishments feature around the top; a nod to Rose Lamartine Yates, the Wimbledon WSPU’s honorary secretary in 1910.
The vessel also displays, on the foot of the vase, the triangular pattern from the WSPU’s Holloway Suffragette Brooch; The Portcullis, awarded to Rose following her imprisonment in Holloway Jail.
The handles depict two suffragette pins and, most notably, the plinth showcases a ticket for a Wimbledon WSPU meeting; signed by Margaret Grant and listing the address, times and seat number.
