What happens to an object when it is placed in a museum, and what happens when it becomes the subject of a work of art?
Objects of Enchantment invites visitors to pause, look closely, and consider how the everyday can transform when it is lifted from daily life and placed on a museum plinth or translated into paint. A teacup, a toy, a chair, once ordinary, becomes charged with new meaning through context, attention, and imagination.
Created by Wimbledon Museum’s Artist in Residence, Alastair Gordon, this exhibition draws from the museum’s collection to reinterpret familiar artefacts and quietly remarkable details, encouraging us to reflect on what makes something worthy of care and notice. Gordon’s meticulously detailed paintings build on the 17th-century quodlibet tradition of trompe-l’oeil, playfully testing the boundaries between authenticity and artifice.
Alastair will also lead two drawing workshops in March. Click here for further details.
