Andy Burgess at Expo Chicago 2024

11 - 14 April 2024
Lauded by Annabel Sampson, Deputy Editor of Tatler, as 'the next David Hockney' artist Andy Burgess, originally from London, but now based in Arizona, continuously delves into his fascination with contemporary architecture. His latest series of paintings vividly reimagines iconic modernist and contemporary houses, selected with the precision of a portrait painter for their clean lines, bold geometric design, and dynamic forms. Burgess brings a fresh perspective to his subjects, simplifying and abstracting forms further while inventing new color schemes that expand the modernist lexicon. Real places are sometimes reinvented, with alterations to architecture, design, and lighting, imbuing the scenes with a dream-like quality.

Burgess' exploration extends to collages, reflecting his love for vintage graphics from the 1930s–50s, considered a 'golden age' in American graphic design. These collages are constructed from vintage American ephemera, cut up and reconstructed into visual and verbal poems, dazzling pop art pieces, and cityscapes. Combining his passions for mid-century architecture and collage, Burgess creates intricate pieces using hand-painted paper and permanent inks, adding textural interest and a tapestry-like effect. His works span iconic subjects such as Frank Lloyd Wright’s Guggenheim Museum and Fallingwater residence, alongside Los Angeles classics like The Stahl House. Burgess has undertaken significant commissions for public and private institutions worldwide, including London’s Crossrail and the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, where his site-specific artworks aim to enhance the environment for patients and staff alike.

Among Burgess's collectors are Booker prize-winning author Kazuo Ishiguro, actor Emma Thompson, and esteemed art enthusiasts such as the Tisch family in New York and Richard and Ellen Sandor in Chicago. In March 2023, Burgess released a limited edition book of abstract ink collages titled 'Tiger’s Eye' alongside an exhibition in Tucson, Arizona, and the launch of silk scarf designs based on the collages.

Andy Burgess has been represented internationally by Cynthia Corbett Gallery since 2004.
