CALL FOR ARTISTS OPENS JANUARY 2012
We are delighted to announce the launch of the Young Masters Art Prize 2012, which will open for artist applications from January 2012, as well as the launch of the Young Masters website: www.young-masters.co.uk. This will provide further information on artist applications and the history of the Young Masters Art Prize. Call for Artists will remain open until April 2012.
We are celebrating this launch with a solo exhibition of previous winners, Ghost of a Dream, in the Art Projects section of the London Art Fair.
Innovation is hugely important but it rarely comes from nothing. The Young Masters Art Prize looks for artists who combine innovation with awareness of the Old Masters and the art of the past. 'Old Masters' in the meaning of the prize refers not just to Europe but also to wider, global artistic traditions. By drawing attention to the legacy of the Old Masters in contemporary art, the prize opens up a wider dialogue about our present-day artistic culture and its relationship to the past. This prize is unique in shedding light on the way artists use their awareness of the past to come to terms with the present.
The prize is open to artists living in the UK and overseas. We welcome artists working in a vast range of practices: painting, sculpture and installation, printmaking, drawing, video and sound. Our aim is to encourage emerging and newly established artists to apply, as well as those who are perhaps established abroad but less well known in the UK.
Following a rigorous selection process, the awards ceremony and exhibtion, curated by Daria Khan of the Spazio Carbonesi Foundation in Bologna, will take place in November 2012, on prestigious Cork Street, Mayfair. Chair of the judging panel is renowned art historian and journalist Godfrey Barker; other judges include Colin Wiggins (Head of Education at the National Gallery, London); Jerwood-prize winning artist Adam Dant; renowned Belgian collector Alain Servais; and Roy Bolton, Old Master dealer and TV presenter of arts programme Show me the Monet.

HISTORY OF THE YOUNG MASTERS ART PRIZE
The Young Masters Art Prize operates as a not-for-profit initiative, which was originally launched in 2009 by London-based American gallerist Cynthia Corbett. Young Masters Art Prize 2009 served as the inaugural launch of the art prize. Awarded by an independent panel of judges, the prize was awarded to two winners: American artist duo, Ghost of a Dream, and Héctor de Gregorio, a Spanish artist living and working in London. Sponsored by AXA UK, the artists were presented with the award by AXA Group Chief Executive Nicolas Moreau.
In 2010 Lluís Barba was selected as having the best response to the concept of Young Masters, and was honoured with a special pop-up exhibition at the Courtauld Institute as part of the East Wing IV Exhibitionism show. Lluís Barba reworks iconic artworks to comment on contemporary society, introducing modern characters into Hieronymus Bosch’s or Pieter Brueghel’s medieval scenes.
