The Cynthia Corbett Gallery is pleased to announce the first major solo exhibition of American artist Klari Reis at Gallery 27 on Cork Street.  The artist will presenting an exciting survey of her new work,    inspired by science and molecular processes.

Klari Reis, puts a positive and colourful spin on a somewhat controversial element of 21st century life—prescription drugs. The intent is to deflect the negativity, distrust and avoidance often associated with modern medicine. The artist celebrates the amazing advances in biomedical and pharmaceutical science that transcend the oft-publicized downside to progress in drug therapy. The images are organic, alive with movement and life-affirming. Each work is a tribute to progress in an area of science that has brought hope to the afflicted and comfort to those in distress.

Klari Reis received her M.A. in painting from the City and Guilds of London Art School in 2004.  She is currently painting in her native Northern California where the presence of many of the world’s top pharmaceutical companies and research institutions serves as her muse.

The artist’s unique paintings result from the unpredictable reactions of the media used in their creation. With careful and deliberate application of unusual pigments and plastics, the artworks often “paint themselves”. Similarly, the human body may respond in surprising ways to the invasion of medication. Sometimes a reaction to medicine results in side effects, but most often a person begins to feel more vibrant and alive. There is “Hope”. The paintings are intended to appeal to positive emotions:  a purely visceral and exciting encounter.

Throughout history, the seemingly polar opposite worlds of art and science have had powerful intersections. Great scientific discoveries have occurred as a result of creative, unorthodox methodology outside of the traditional arenas of research and laboratories. For Reis as well, years of experimentation with new-age materials and unconventional applications have similarly resulted in an exciting incarnation of contemporary art. Like her pioneering scientific and artistic predecessors, Klari Reis has created a new medium of painting and will be displaying in this important London exhibition a range of exciting new work. Challenging yet comforting, evoking surface beauty but full of enormous depth, the work is a triumph of artistic mastery and scientific advances pushing once again the boundaries of contemporary art.
