| "Jazz was once the
music of yesteryear. Now, it is growing in popularity in cities the world
over. Its powerful rhythm and improvisation have always appealed to performers
with strong characters. Using instruments or voices, passion or pathos,
they have used jazz to stir the human spirit. Nina Gruschwitz has an expressive
personality, loves jazz and imbues all her work with a plethora of emotions.
With brushes for instruments, this artist reinforces the contemporary
impact of jazz. It is now seen and not just heard." - Carol Cordrey,
art historian and critic Nina was born in the Russian City of St. Petersburg and obtained a Masters Degree from Moscow’s Gubkin Academy. Gruschwitz started her career as an artist in 1991 after she moved to Germany where she studied under acclaimed teacher and artist Margarita Budini. From 1994 to 1998 she established her studio in The Netherlands and in 2000 she moved to London where she has been living and working as an artist. Now based in Richmond, Gruschwitz finds artistic inspiration for her paintings in music, poetry and philosophy. The powerful colours and dramatic shapes in her paintings reflect her own experience of living in different cultures, while still infused by her Russian heritage. London has been very successful for Gruschwitz - she has exhibited her work in both solo and group shows and has begun to exhibit her work across Europe and overseas. In December 2003 Gruschwitz represented the UK at The Florence Bienniale and in November 2004 was invited to be Artist in Residence for Black History Month at the National Opera Studios in London. Other artistic residencies include River Walk at The OXO Tower and The Players Theatre in The West End. Recently a series of her works have been selected to illustrate CD covers, music and poetry books. The work of Nina Gruschwitz has received extensive press coverage including BBCi London Entertainment, BBCi Russian News, The Jewish Post, Russian Radio First, Lloyd’s List, Richmond Magazine, Private Equity, What’s On, Shipping Monthly and Nike New Art in Europe. Jazz has always meant a lot to Nina Gruschwitz and she considers the musical language of jazz to be one of her greatest inspirations. Emotion leaps from her work, as it does from the very best of jazz. Her exhibition - Jazz in the City - is the culmination of a life's work for this exciting, innovative and unique artist. It also begins a tour featuring Nina Gruschwitz as an artist in residence, to include The International Jazz Festival in Moscow, during which Nina’s work will be exhibited at the State Museum for Contemporary Art, Moscow. In 2006, Gruschwitz will present her project Kinky-Kalinki Transrussian Express, a documentary film about art, music and the club scene in London between 2000 and 2005. Jazz in The City is presented by corbettPROJECTS, a venture launched in 2004 to exhibit young, emerging, and experimental artists in a variety of media including painting, sculpture, photography, video installation, and performance art. corbettPROJECTS has an annual programme of exhibitions, both nationally and internationally, operates from innovative spaces, and brings art into unexpected environments, thereby enhancing the appreciation of the viewer.
